Israel's prime minister decried Secretary of State John Kerry's Mideast policy speech as a "deep disappointment" on Wednesday and vowed to work with the incoming Trump administration to contain the fallout from last week's United Nations resolution calling Israeli settlements illegal.

In the most detailed criticism by a USA official of Israeli settlement construction, Mr Kerry said the West Bank was being "broken up into small parcels like a Swiss cheese that can never constitute a real state".

-President-elect Donald Trump has said "things will be different" for Israel and the United Nations when he enters the Oval Office next month, but some question if he can fix the declining relationship between the United States and its closest Middle East ally.

In the video, Trump said Israel "has been treated very, very unfairly" and accused the United Nations of causing problems rather than solving them.

Netanyahu has since tweeted back, thanking Trump.

President Barack Obama "would have been wise" to veto the U.N. Security Council resolution condemning Israeli settlements last week, former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, D-Maine, said Tuesday. He insisted, however, that settlement expansion actually placed a security burden on Israel's defense forces and was an impediment to peace with the rest of the Arab world.

Kerry's address comes after the United States abstained from a U.N. vote condemning Israeli settlements as a violation of global law. Apparently, the request came directly from Benjamin Netanyahu's office.

In a 70-minute speech made on Wednesday in Washington, Kerry said there will never be peace between Israelis and Palestinians unless they are living in their own states.

'We continue to believe that the construction of settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories is illegal, which is why we supported UN Security Council Resolution 2334 last week. Most recently, the Obama administration vetoed such a measure in 2011. It has also worsened the already-chilly relations between Neytanyahu and President Obama, stemming most prominently from the US-led nuclear negotiations with Iran and Obama's longstanding opposition to Israel's settlement policy.
