21 people rescued from "Sky Cabin" ride at California theme park

The first two people, harnessed to firefighters and hugging them tightly, were lowered to the ground Friday night about 5 ½ hours after the Sky Cabin first got stuck.

Emergency services were called to the park at 5pm but when their attempts to bring the viewing platform back down to the ground failed, passengers had to be winched down, one-by-one, by rope. There were 20 passengers and the ride's operator aboard the ride.

Knott's Berry Farm was opened in 1920 and features 40 rides.

Park officials had cotton candy waiting for the trapped children.

Brazil's Foreign Ministry told Reuters it had no comment on the case, other than to say it was being fully pursued by police. Brazil, especially Rio de Janeiro, has always been plagued by high rates of violent crime .

The Sky Cabin is located in the park's Boardwalk area, and is described on the Knott's Berry Farm website as a "slow spinning attraction. with a mild thrill rating".

Eight hours later, the riders were finally brought down one by one using a rope and harness system.

Kurtz says the ride is confined and the enclosed riders aren't exposed to the elements, so time is on the firefighters' side.

Guests were being evacuated Friday evening, according to Knott's Berry Farm officials.

The park said the ride will be closed until the investigation is complete.

It is not yet known what caused the ride to stop.

None of the riders were hurt or were in danger, said Capt. Larry Kurtz, a spokesman for the Orange County Fire Authority. The amusement park also did not mention when the ride would be up and running again.
