On the same day the letter was sent, the NAACP staged an hours-long sit-in protest at Sessions' office in Alabama; six demonstrators, including the civil rights organization's president, have been arrested. The protest by the NAACP is not the only opposition to Sessions' nomination.

The NAACP first had issues with Sessions when he unsuccessfully prosecuted a group of African American activists for voter fraud.

And now he recently appeared in social media by posting a photo on his Instagram and Twitter profiles with his announcement. Near the end of November, Sheeran officially came back in a performance for a charity gig at the National History Museum.

Flores ' statement quoted some of those black leaders, including Larry Thompson, a former deputy attorney general, who told the Washington Post that Sessions "doesn't a racist bone in his body".

The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to begin hearings on Sessions' nomination January 10, with many civil rights groups standing in opposition.

The NAACP has also been live-streaming the demonstration inside Sessions' office on Facebook.

The arrest came after they refused the building manager's request that they leave after the building closed at 6 p.m. As best as I can tell, Sessions hasn't commented publicly on his plans, but if the Alabaman doesn't vote, it will reduce the margin for error in the 52-48 chamber. The Alabama Senator has also been a staunch opponent of several civil rights causes, and he even lost a federal judge appointment in 1986 after cracking a joke about the KKK (although he has vehemently denied this claim).
