SpaceX to Send 2 Citizens to Moon in 2018: Elon Musk

Musk said SpaceX was approached by "two private individuals" who know one another, whom he did not identify.

SpaceX, or Space Exploration Technologies Corp., will first debut its in-development Falcon Heavy rocket with an accompanying new spacecraft called Dragon 2, in an uncrewed mission at the end of this year.

"Elon Musk is trying to keep up the excitement", said Caceres.

NASA may put astronauts on deep space test flight
The SLS and Orion missions will help put the agency in a position to unlock the mysteries of space. NASA managers determined that the latter option is more pragmatic than the former.

SpaceX said the people paid "a significant amount of money" for the moon trip.

The entire mission would take about a week.

"It's a pretty big mouthful to take two private citizens to orbit the moon", said Marco Caceres, a senior space analyst with Teal Group, an aerospace and defense market researcher. Musk said they expect to conduct fitness testing and begin initial training for those embarking on the mission later this year. Other flight teams have also expressed strong interest and we expect more to follow. The announcement comes as SpaceX struggles to get NASA astronauts off the ground on a relatively short trip to the space station. This first demonstration mission will be in automatic mode, without people on board. The manned mission is scheduled for the second quarter of 2018.

5 things to know about the SpaceX launch
Shortly after launch, Central Florida residents might hear an explosion-like sound as the rocket returns to land on the coast. SpaceX is back in action and has successfully completed a historic launch from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

SpaceX has announced that it is planning a lunar mission next year.

SpaceX will use the same launch pad near Cape Canaveral, Florida, that was used for the Apollo programs missions. But still, this will be the first time in 45 years humans return to deep space, and the company says that these travelers will go further into the solar system than any humans have before.
