Lego is creating a 'Women of Nasa' set with female astronauts

The Lego line, which was created in conjunction with NASA, includes a display of the five famed women and several vignettes of NASA technology and history, including the codes and calculating instruments used in space missions and a mini space shuttle.

The women are computer scientist Margaret Hamilton, mathematician Katherine Johnson, astronaut Sally Ride, astronomer and executive Nancy Grace Roman and astronaut Mae Jemison.

Weinstock first submitted her photos to LEGO Ideas, an online platform where anyone can pitch an idea for a LEGO set.

The others are Sally Ride, the first United States woman in space; Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman in space; Margaret Hamilton, a computer scientist who developed flight software for the Apollo lunar missions; and astronomer Nancy Roman, who helped plan the Hubble Space Telescope project.

Last year's Women of NASA Lego campaign has ultimately succeeded in its attempt to have five icons of the space industry recognised in Lego form. The toys are scheduled to hit shelves in late 2017 or early 2018.

If one of those names looks familiar, it's likely because of Hidden Figures, the film that celebrates the work of female scientists including Katherine Johnston.

"It certainly is a wonderful confluence", Weinstock said.
